Top Reasons To Build An Email List Today

Imagine for a second what would happen if Pinterest and Facebook changed their algorithm and suddenly people no longer saw your pins or Pinterest or your posts on your business Facebook page. How would you communicate with them?

You wouldn’t be able to.

Just last month, Google threw Pinterest a curve ball.

A forceful curveball to be specific.

You see, Google released a massive update that affected Pinterest in a big way.  Before the update when people would search for things like “teacher appreciation gifts” or “top baby gifts” users would be able to click on the image from Pinterest and it would take them directly to the blog.

Not anymore.

The update forces users to either sign up for an account with Pinterest or log in before proceeding.

Having hundreds or even thousands of followers on social media means nothing if you can’t reach out to them outside of the social networks. It’s imperative you build your email list today.

Building relationships

As bloggers, our main goal with list building should be to build a meaningful relationship with our audience. We want to be able to connect with them on a deeper level than their Pinterest or Instagram handle.

Last week I received an email from someone named Rae. Rae has been a subscriber since my early blogger days and I’ve enjoyed having her over the years. She’s one of the few people that has seen this blog grown from its budding stages.

Rae reached out to me to tell me that she appreciated two things from me: honesty and consistency.

She went on the tell me that she went on an email binge and removed herself from about a dozen email lists. Ouch!

Come to find out, Rae had been added to a few lists after meeting bloggers at conventions or local “meet ups”. She had also be added to lists and the email greetings would have to wrong name or even worse…an HTML code where her first name should be.

No, it’s not a joke that there’s an opt in bar after telling you a horror story about email lists! You won’t be disappointed in the value I provide my audience.

When building your lists with ConvertKit, MailerLite or any email marketing software, be honest. Ensure people know they’re signing up for your email list by sending a double opt in email.

Be consistent. After people sign up for a content upgrade or webinar, follow up with them. Create a workflow that adds them to your welcome sequence.

Increase Sales Revenue

When you build an email subscriber list, you own it. You have the email addresses for people that are actually interested in what you have to say. They signed up to listen to you! You can target your messages to speak directly to your subscribers. The bigger your list, the greater the opportunity to increase your income.

When I started blogging back in 2013, I didn’t realize how important an email list was. I also thought an email list was for retailers. Wonk. Wonk.

After a year and a half of blogging I decided to start building my list. I still cringe at the thought of leaving money on the table.

You may be thinking that a year and a half couldn’t have made that much of a difference right? Wrong.

You don’t need a huge list to create revenue. I started emailing my list product reviews when I had less than 100 subscribers.

Believe it or not, I still made money. I made enough money to put the myth about needing a huge list to rest.
